How youth can be supported

Children and adolescents have a natural capacity to succeed. However, sometimes they have sensitive temperaments or have faced adverse circumstances in their lives that have made it tougher for them to cope. Through support, youth can learn how to regulate their intense emotions and become resilient, successful kids!

Our team adopts a strengths-based and collaborative approach to treatment, which is grounded in evidence-based, research-informed principles and practices. Because all youth are unique and require individualized treatment, we draw from a range of diverse approaches and orientations to best meet their needs.

  • Attachment-based framework
  • Dialectal Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

How parents can be supported

Parents play an essential role in supporting a child's or adolescent’s development and well-being. Therefore, a systemic approach, where parents are active participants throughout treatment, is most effective and beneficial.
Often parents are included in therapy sessions, depending on the age of their youth. This allows parents to learn skills and strategies along side their youth in order to help generalize these new coping tools to the home environment. This also helps to strengthen the relationship between youth and parents, and assist in getting everyone on the same page.

Parent consultation can be a significant component of therapy. It helps parents gain a better understanding of what is underlying their youth’s behaviour and feel more confident in effecting change at home. Parents often find this incredibly valuable because it addresses their unique needs as a parent and empowers them to respond to their children from a more balanced, accepting and less reactive stance.

Mindful Parenting Groups are also offered to help parents gain greater awareness and acceptance of themselves and their children, while developing more balanced parenting strategies. Stay tuned for when the next group starts!

How schools, care-providers, and the community be helped

We enjoy presenting workshops to professionals, parents, and youth throughout Ontario. We believe that it is incredibly important to collaborate with clinicians, educators, and other professionals in order to ensure that children’s well-being is the focus across all environments. We have previously presented at schools, mental health agencies, the Children’s Aid Society, hospitals, and community functions. A range of workshops are offered, or a specific presentation can be developed to meet specific needs of the staff, group or audience. Please feel free to send an email if you are interested in a presentation to your staff, parents or community.
